Raising general health and safety awareness among our school children is one of the priorities of the Gozo Branch. In order to achieve this aim, we print materials organize talks to school children and even do an art competition for schools. We hope in the future to hold also a first aid competition.

Dolphin smiles educational pack

Funded by the European unit dolphin smiles is an educational package aimed to educate young children in carious aspects of water safety. It aims to educate and increase the awareness in children so as to enjoy water is a safe manner.

The overall aims of the project are:

• Guide children how to enjoy water in a safe way
• Show children how to prevent accidents
• Teach children how to react to accidents
• Teach children some of the basic skills in order to render self aid or first aid

The pack consists of the following parts:

• Users guide - lesson plans and fact sheets
• Activity book
• Posters (10)
• Certificate application form
• Resource Kit (CD containing the above items)

The users guide is meant to be used by teachers, educators etc, the lesson plans contain the material that should be taught to the children. The activity book provides the follow up activities while the posters highlight the main themes found this educational pack. The activity sheets found in the activity book can be photocopied as needed.

This water safety awareness program is aimed to be done in an informal way thus being flexible in content etc. Care should be taken so that children are given their desired space so that they can freely express themselves etc.

A simple lesson format was used for the lesson plan. In fact this consists of an introduction, objectives, values, discussion, follow up activities and conclusion. Anybody can use the pack even if he or she is a non swimmer.

Road safety campaign www.1-life.info

Every year we take an active part in the European road safety campaign. This campaign is run in Europe by the European Red Cross network. The campaign educates children so as to reduce of the number of children and young people who are injured or killed in road traffic accidents in the EU member states and candidate countries.
