St. Aloysius College
As part of fund raising activities, the abseiling team of the Malta Red Cross Gozo Branch has organized an abseiling event for some 28 students from St. Aloysius College from Malta.
This event took place at a familiar spot for abseilers at Dwejra, San Lawrenz. After a brief introduction to this new sport by some Red Cross Volunteers the students were shown the equipment to be used during the event. A brief but essential talk about safety precautions that must be taken by everyone on site was also done. Eventually the first students donned the harnesses and after some double checking they began to tackle the 30m drop accompanied by a Red Cross abseiler.
I would like to thank the administration of St. Aloysius College that trusted the branch to do this event, the students that participated and most of all the volunteers who gave a hand to prepare this activity.
Youths Abseiling Activity
Another abseiling activity that was organized in July was done as a social activity for the youths of the MRCGB.

A handful of abseilers met at 3pm to load the newly acquired land-rover with all the abseiling equipment needed for this event and at 3.30pm headed towards Dwejra to set-up the equipment for the event. The type of activity that was organized for the youths was an aerial-runway.
Basically this activity consists of anchoring both ends of the ropes at the top and bottom, and with the help of a special tool, the rope is made taut. The ropes are not vertical but sloped, at an angle with the cliff. The abseilers then slide down this rope with the help of special pulleys.
