Working with German Red Cross at Cologne

Malta Red Cross Gozo Branch Volunteers together with Monika Knepper and other German volunteers

Don’t think that it was only work and more work that we found in Germany. Nothing is more beside the truth.. The first Tuesday evening we had a little tour through the city guided by Monika during which we visited a bier stube where the beer came from a wooden barrel, so it was without the extra gas. And after that it was a lovely pasta/pizza diner as a welcome. On Wednesday she took us to a long walking tour to point out some nice, not to expensive places to eat. On Monday she went with us on a shopping tour so everybody could visit the shop(s) that had their special interest. On the second Wednesday there was the barbecue in the garden of the Red Cross and on Thursday there was the farewell diner party in a lovely Spanish restaurant. ad we all the time acted as a group, on Friday that ended. That morning we all went (again early!) to the Central Station to wave Felicia out. She had to leave that day, because she had to   attend a wedding on Sunday in Malta, so Saturday was hairdresser’s day and crossing over to Malta for her. After that the rest of us went his or her own way to meet each other again in the evening for diner.

The plans we had made for the last two days were rudely disturbed because Pierre suddenly got such    terrible pains that very early Saturday morning it was decided that he should go to hospital. And there he had to stay till Sunday. When he was     released, it was to late for the big trip we had planned. But Monika came with a lovely solution, so there we went in a minibus, together with Monika for a little trip into the hills where the    famous      vineyards are. After a lovely walk through the area we ended at a winery, where we drank a glass of wine and some of us bought some wine to take home.

Monday morning it was clearing out the rooms and leaving for our flight home, an experience richer and amazed about how different the Red Cross in a big city has to work.  If you ever get the chance to go at an exchange program, take that chance with both hands, it widens your     horizon tremendously.
