On the 9th of July a night hike was organized by the Malta Red Cross Gozo Branch for anyone who would have liked to break the monotonous rhythm of the day with some adventure. At around seven in the evening, an average of twenty persons gathered near Ta’ Pinu’s shrine. Most of us were geared up with all the necessary equipment, including appropriate clothing for trekking, a backpack filled with only the most vital things such as; food, water, some basic cutlery, two torches, a compass, a Swiss knife and most importantly a small first-aid kit. Everyone tried to keep as light weight as possible, on advice of our hike leader, Anthony Grech. There were also those who were inexperienced enough to load their backpacks with too much food or unnecessary equipment which only slowed them down and tired them even more. Luckily they will learn not to do that again next time!

Our leader carried out an initial head count and we set off towards our first goal, Jordan’s Lighthouse to witness the spectacular sunset. After taking a couple of photos of the dazzling scenario, we went on to “Wied il-Ghasri” which is found right under the peaceful village of Zebbug, my hometown. At first we had some difficulty finding a path in the dark through the fields but after some dead ends, we succeeded in reaching our destination. Finally we proceeded to our final goal, Xwejni bay. Headcounts were carried out regularly by our leader during the hike to make sure that no one got lost or lagged behind.

As soon as we arrived at Xwejni, we lit a barbeque which had been brought there in a jeep. Some of us jumped in the water for a short night swim. Luckily there were no jellyfish and the water was crystal clear, which made the experience ever the more refreshing! We dried up near the fire and then we all settled down and began cooking our meat. While eating, we took a lot more photos while we laughed at jokes and pranks that we did on each other! When we finally checked the time, it was half past one in the morning! We quickly cleaned the area and said our goodbyes to each other, with the promise of doing it again soon!
